FT is a common oral lesion occurring in approximately 5-6% of the general population, although the prevalence has been reported to vary from 1% to 42.8%.

FT rarely or not at all occurs before the age of 4 years and has been observed in only 0-2.11% of children younger than 10 years old. It has been shown clearly that prevalence of FT increases with age.
